Back in the box this morning after taking yesterday off. Today’s WOD was a little on the funky side, a hodgepodge of movements:
- Overhead squats 3-3-3-3-3
- 15 hip extensions
- Then an abs tabata
OH squats seem to freak a lot of people out–mostly because it feels like a really awkward movement, especially if you don’t engage your shoulders, keeping them active the entire time the weight is overhead. I’ll admit I really sucked at this when I first tried it. It felt like the bar was going to crash on my head and I still struggle with bring down the weight from overhead after I’m done. For today’s WOD I took it easy and hit 68lbs.
We also tried out the snatch balance movement. Very different movement–take a look a the video and simply think DROP IT LOW.
I have a history of knee issues and yesterday my right knee didn’t feel quite right. When I was playing soccer I constantly battled with knee pain, especially with my right knee–I actually have chondromalacia patella or patellofemoral syndrome, which are fancy medical terms for anterior knee pain caused by a variety of things, but in my case it’s because I’m slightly knock-kneed so I need to constantly stretch out my hamstrings and quads to loosen up my knee joint. Fun, right?
Now that I’ve become more active with Crossfit, I recognize that this can become an issue again so to be proactive against further pain I picked up a roll of RockTape from Athletic Performance in Willow Glen. The box includes general knee pain taping instructions , but I think I’m going to go old school with this and tape up using the McConnell method–which basically looks like I fell down in the playground and scraped my knee like the good ole days and have a massive bandage. Dorky, but I think it will do the trick…stay tuned.
Last night I met up with a couple of my PR friends at the SJ Giants game against the Stockton Ports–man has that place cleaned up! The weather was perfect and the crowd was having a great time. We even ran into a couple SF Giants players.
The SF Giants also swept the LA Dodgers yesterday so it was a great day to be a Bay Area baseball fan.
