I haven’t been to Crossfit all week. There I said it. I can practically feel the burning from my morning crew’s laser eyes. “FAIL.”
Honestly, I haven’t been feeling like myself this week. It’s hard to describe, but my stomach has been feeling super uncomfortable, almost like a burning feeling. Dave and my mom suspect a stomach ulcer – and though I haven’t been checked out by my doctor, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is my diagnosis. What caused this pain? Not sure. It could have been something I ate, or my super stressful Monday. As bizarre as it may seem, extreme stress intensely effects my body. During finals my junior year in college, I broke out in hives all over my midsection. It was like something out of The X Files. I’m a stress monkey and I need to constantly keep my mental state in check or my body goes haywire. Stress, food, flu – whatever, I’ve been in a funk and now I’m anxious to get back in the box.
Ironically, a couple people have asked what types of supplements I take and what my vitamin regimen is like. This should go without saying that I’m not a doctor or registered dietitian, this is just what works for me – please consult your doctor before taking any supplements!

Why the supplements at night you ask? Right now, I’m under the belief that your body is replenishing itself during sleep, thus supplements will be at optimum use. That said, I change it up every once in awhile just to check in with my body to see what still works out and what doesn’t. I’m especially liking the krill oil in the morning — I feel more alert and ready to take on the day (not in the I-just-had-ten-cups-of-coffee way) – not to mention I feel like it has helped out with my muscle soreness from the previous days’ WOD.
Here’s what my sup-crew looks like (ya, I just made that up):
As you can see, the only “preventative” meds I really take are an allergy pill and multivitamin so I need to step up my game…
Thankfully, I have a group of friends who constantly give me tips and treats for how to stay healthy via natural means. One friend in particular, Catherine at Between Silicon to Sea, always has cool “witch doctor” remedies to offer up.
She’s is one of the coolest babes I know so I thought I’d pick her brain and share what she does to remain in good health:
1. What do your meals usually consist of? Do you have an eats routine?
I try to keep my meals very consistent and balanced! I rely on my juicer for my morning kick start, followed by whole fruit, steel cut oats, or yogurt. Lunch and dinner are a mixture of raw veggies and protein with the occasional carbohydrate thrown in. I love potatoes, I’m German after all!
2. What’s your vitamin/supplement/witch doctor regimen like on the regular?
I take a multivitamin every morning, mostly for the calcium, followed by fish oil for the omega 3 property and I end my day with a Vitamin D pill.
3. Flu and cold season is right around the corner – do you take any
preventative meds? What do you take when you’re under the weather?
During the flu season I take a “Wellness” vitamin, found at Whole Foods. Filled with zinc and Echinacea. So crucial to preventing sickness or at least shortening the duration of the flu. If you do end up catching something, utilize homeopathic outlets like vitamins and teas to lessen the severity. Also, drink a ton of water. Flushing your body out helps tremendously.
4. Any other supplements you’ve been wanting to try or have heard good
things about?
I have been wanting to try liquid flax seed oil, fairly expensive but worth it! Apparently, it holds the highest amount of omega 3’s and omega 6’s, a good fat. It aids in fighting off viruses, keeps blood cells healthy and mobilizes any saturated fat you may have in your body, keep it moving!
Make sure to follow her on Twitter (@candidcaffy) and on her awesome Tumblr, (Between Silicon & Sea).
Of course, when I can’t workout I get the itch to cook (mostly bake) and I experimented with the crustless zucchini quiche recipe from Practical Paleo.
It was so good and perfect for a quick breakfast!! I can’t wait to try out more recipes…but more importantly, cheer on the SF Giants in the League Championship Series!!!!!!!!!
What vitamins, minerals or supplements do you take?
Do you have useful tips or tricks for the cold/flu season?
