So you remember when I said that I finally got my groove back? Well, I spoke too soon. It took a lot longer than I thought it would — hence, the delayed blog posts. What can I say? I’ve been a busy girl!
Good news: I’m no longer experiencing a 24/7 stomach ache. Yay! I’ve still been taking it easy on my WODs, but I don’t feel like I’m going to vom every hour. Victory.
Now, what the heck have I been up to? For starters, work has been a whirlwind of meetings. Last week consisted of all-day meetings for three days and yesterday I was posted up at a summit for “marketing to engineers.” I’m not complaining–it was all very productive and I was able to get my serious nerd on.
Saturday was an epic CrossFit day. Dave competed in the Oktoberfit team event hosted at CrossFit Silicon Valley and I had a blast watching all my friends kick ass!
Here are a couple highlights:
You can find the rest of the event pictures on Facebook.
Overall, it was such a fun day and I loved watching all the athletes perform–very inspirational! When am I going to compete? Who knows, but rumor has it–NorCal CrossFit is planning a December throwdown…stay tuned!
When Monday rolled around I was so anxious to get back on my routine (3 on, 1 off) and break in the new Oly shoes.
The WOD called for everybody’s favorite, the SNATCH:
1 Hang Power snatch
1 Hang squat snatch
1 Squat snatch
EMOM 10min
60% 1RM (#55)
+
Snatch 5-5-3-3-1-1 (#75)
I couldn’t have programmed a better start to the week. Oh! I can’t forget to mention the bonus burpee tabata that our coach tossed in at the end. Sneaky…
At first go, the Reebok Oly lifters felt very odd compared to my normal WOD sneakers (New Balance Minimus Zero). Odd meaning, I wasn’t used to the rigidness of the shoe (which they are primarily made for, stability).
Have you ever played Zelda? I have to admit, played it all the time as a kid and still do on our Wii–such a fun game, but that’s beside the point. You know Link’s iron boots he wears when going underwater? You know the clunky walk? That was me for the first half of that WOD:
I fell in love with the shoes when I started working on my heavy sets. During the moments of typically instability (catching the bar in an OHS position), I felt grounded and my body became more aligned on the frontal plane. Essentially, I didn’t have to worry about my feet finding a good position or wiggling into the lift. It just happened. I’m going to credit decent mechanics and good coaching, but the new olys definitely allowed me to focus on speed rather than my feet.
Today’s WOD was a different story. I had serious nerves going into this one:
30 Hang clean (135/95) #85
40 Double Unders (attempts count)
50 Pistols, alternating (rolling)
1km Row
Look familiar? It’s inspired by the individual event 2 WOD from this year’s regionals. Lovely.
And this wasn’t even the RX weight. Gessh! I have a tendency of psyching myself out right before 3-2-1-Go. It’s more of a minor panic of, “Oh man, I should drop off some weight.” Today, I went in the opposite direction and added more weight. I know, cray! I’m sure happy I did because the hang cleans are an incredibly powerful movement. Quick and dirty. Beast Mode. Whatever you want to call it, nothing compares to the feeling of moving heavy weight successfully.
It took me 14:58 to finish this WOD and I had to resist the urge of jumping of the rower like Bruce Lee.
Some secret news to share: I’ve started the internship program at NorCal and I’ve been spending my evenings at the box helping/shadowing the master coaches in hopes of becoming a badass coach myself. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best and continue my “fitness” education. 🙂
That said, more time at the box means more time to practice skill work! I’m coming for you, double-unders, ring dips and the mystical muscle-up!!
How do you continue your education? What do you love learning about both professionally and athletically?
