Happy Monday, y’all. I don’t know about you, but I’m in a much better state of mind than I was last week. I think it was the quite, relaxing weekend and the fact that we finally saw The Dark Knight Rises. Excellent movie and I highly recommend it!
I love it when 1 rep maxes are programmed on Mondays. There’s no better way of starting your week than kicking ass and hitting a personal best. Today is especially exciting because it’s back squat 1RM test day. The last time I attempted a back squat 1RM I had just started at NorCal Crossfit and didn’t quite get the hang of the movement + heavy weight. Needless to say, my first go at it was rough and I only hit 117lb.
This morning was a completely different experience. Luckily, I was paired up with a Crossfit veteran, who is all-around badass, and I was forced to keep up with her weight attempts (for the most part). I don’t know if there was something in the air this morning, but today felt super motivating–people moving heavier weight and making PRs left and right. I’m proud to say that I hit a new PR of 148lbs, which makes my old record look like baby weight. BOOM.
I know people have different ways of getting pumped up or have personal tricks to flip the “GO” switch, but for some reason, the only thing that kept popping up in my head was this little diddy from a HipFit shirt I saw at the Crossfit Games: “ASS MOVES MASS“. Clever… Call me crazy, but this mini mantra got me through to a new PR. I’ll take it.
Usually, I maintain my fear and butterflies by taking a deep breath and just going for it…
What ways to you get in the right frame of mind before approaching heavy weight? Steady breath? Screaming?
Here’s part II of the WOD courtesy of Norcal:
- Run 400m with plate (45/25lbs). Accumulate 50 Overhead walking lunges at some point on the run. Break the 50 into as many sets as desired.
It felt super awkward to run with the plate and my legs felt like jelly after the lunges. Not a crazy sweat-sesh, but a solid way to end a great class! Shout-out to Megan and Lan for their new PRs!! Heyooo!
