There’s a ton of excitement buzzing in the Crossfit community today. Last night Dave Castro, co-director of the Reebok Crossfit Games, announced a surprise workout for the competitors and it’s seriously like a page out of The Hunger Games:
For time:
Swim 700± meters
Bike 8± kilometers
Run 11± kilometers
THEN
Complete Camp Pendleton School of Infantry Obstacle course. Athletes will race against each other head to head in a 3-round bracketed tournament.
AN DEN
Standing broad jump for distance.
Keep in mind this will all take place (with NO spectators) at Camp Pendleton, home of the United States Marine Corps. Seriously?! Last year was pretty clever, but this is INSANE. What could they possibly plan for next year? Fight bears in a forest arena? Outrun a cheetah in the Sahara? Or base jump Half Dome? Haha, ok–you have to admit this programming is pretty damn creative. Hat tip to Mr. Castro. Can’t wait to see how the athletes look on Friday (after a rest day)…yikes!
I really enjoyed today’s WOD:
- “Diane”
- For time: 21-15-9 deadlifts, HSPUs
Nearly six months into Crossfit and deadlifts are emerging as one of my favorite Oly lifts. I’ve made a noticeable improvement in my form and the weight feels easier to move. It’s incredibly satisfying (finally)!
I still fear that I’m going to break my neck attempting HSPUs so I opted for the inclined/box pushups instead–it was a little too easy and I’ll need to use the “band backpack” for my next visit with Diane…
All of this extreme programming reminds me of this incredible video:
Maybe they’ll bring in wing-suits for the 2013 Crossfit Games. You never know!
